Tom was born in Dallas, Texas, on April 19, 1958, to Dorothy and Jim Elliott. By 1972, he was living in Richmond, Virginia, but a year later he moved to Vincent, Alabama, where he worked as a brick mason, owning Cossa Valley Masonry. He was married three times and had three daughters, Jennifer Tatum Elliott, Kathleen Renay Elliott, and Morgan “Schyler” Elliott. Tom was shot and killed on November 27, 1997, at his home near Vincent, Alabama, after confronting two Shelby County police officers with a shotgun. The officers had arrived at Tom’s home to issue a felony warrant.
