Charley was born on October 13, 1884, in Boone County, Arkansas. He lived there for a short time in Arkansas before the family made its way to Texas, first living in Eastland, Texas, then near Moline, Texas. He married Maude Almer [Hunt] Mathis (1881-1978) on December 7, 1902, in Lometa, Texas. Charley was living near Payne Gap, Texas, when he passed away on August 5, 1915, at his home near Moline from nephritis and typhoid fever.
