John was born in Lampasas County, Texas, on September 6, 1906, to Will and Fannie Mathis. John married Lillie Mae Fuston [Mathis] [Piper] (1912-1985) on December 14, 1934, in Travis County, Texas. The 1940 census reports that Wayne and Lillie were living in Eastland, Texas. Later Wayne divorced his wife. Incidentally, Lillie later married William T. Piper on May 22, 1958, and divorced him on April 15, 1969, in San Saba.
John died at the age of 62 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the early morning of September 22, 1968, in San Saba, Texas, where he lived. Wayne rests next to his parents and his son, Wayne Mathis.
