Notes

Will was born in Carroll County, Arkansas, to James Harvey Mathis (1841–1863) and Sally [Jones] Mathis (1838–1870). He married Frances P. “Fannie” Dixon (1865-1933) on January 22, 1882, in Denver, Carroll County, Arkansas. The 1890 census reports that the couple was living in Bearhouse, Ashley, Arkansas. By 1900, according to the U.S. Census, the couple had moved to Lampasas County, and by 1910, they were living in Mills County, in the Payne Gap area. The Mathises lived near the Thomas Thompson, Charles Shipley, John T. Bullock, and William K. Ford families. Will and Fannie had a total of ten children in 25 years. Information from the 1919 Wichita Falls, Texas, City Directory, shows he was living there at that time. He appears to have been living there through the 1920s before moving the Dallas. He died on April 29, 1929, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 64.

From the Four F’s of Moline, Texas:

MATHIS, Will (August 26, 1864-April 29, 1929) was born in Arkansas. He was married to Fannie Dixon (December 6, 1855December 7, 1933) whose birthplace was also in Arkansas. Will and Fannie Mathis are buried in the Payne Gap Cemetery. Will Mathis was a farmer, and operated a thresher. Mrs. John Webb cooked for his thresher crew for one or more seasons. Will and Fannie Mathis children were:

  • Charlie who married Maud Almer Hunt
  • Walt who married Rosie Woolsey.
  • Edd (June 6, 1889-June 29, 1918) who married Jennie Woolsey.
  • Pearl who married Lynn McCaughn.
  • Bill who married Melisa Gettis.
  • George who married Minnie Faubion.
  • Goldie who married Richard Hairston.
  • Dude who married Mildred (?).
  • John (September 6, 1906-September 22, 1968)
  • Juanita (Tincy)

Will and Fannie Mathis first three babies died in infancy. Charlie, Walt, and Edd were small boys when they moved to Moline. Only Juanita, Dude and Goldie are reported living now (1980).
