Obituary published in The Goldthwaite Eagle-Mullin Enterprise, Thursday, July 3, 1986, p. 7:
Funeral Set Here July 3rd For Jessie Duncan Of Goldthwaite
The funeral for Jessie Duncan of Goldthwaite will be held Thursday, July 3, 1986 at 10:00 a.m. from the Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel. Doug Holtzclaw, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Goldthwaite, will officiate. Burial will be in the Payne Gap Cemetery, Mills County, Texas.
Jessie Duncan passed away Monday, June 30, 1986 at Childress General Hospital in Goldthwaite. She was 92 years of age. She was born February 1, 1894 in Payne Gap, Texas. Her parents were Levie [Levi] Golden and Mary Evelyn Jenkins Hunt.
On August 7, 1924 she married Thomas Ell Duncan at Lampasas, Texas. She lived in Mills County most of her life. She was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away October 1, 1975. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Opal Prachyl in 1977 and one grandson, Lynn Duncan.
Survivors include two sons, Troy Duncan of Lometa and Doyle Duncan of Andrews; one daughter, Dorothy Elliott of Fulton, Missouri; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Bill Duncan of Payne Gap.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Jessie was first married to William Joseph Taylor (1889-1917), who died of illness at the age of 27. She had one child with him: Opal Pratchyl (1916-1977), who died in a car accident.
On the occasion of the Ell and Jessie Duncan ranch being recognized by the Texas Family Land Heritage Program, an article in The Goldthwaite Eagle, published on September 14, 1978, provided a record of the ranch’s history: “Mrs. Duncan’s land came from an original Railroad Survey and was purchased in 1860 by Brazilla Payn, who came from Indiana. Mr. Payn was killed by the Indians in 1863. His daughter, Mary [i.e. Martha] Jane “Mattie” Jenkins, bought out the sisters and brothers. She was married to R.T. Jenkins, who established the first post office at Payne Gap. Mrs. Jenkin’s daughter, Mary Evelyn Hunt, then bought the land from her sisters and brothers. Mrs. Hunt was the mother of Jessie Hunt Duncan, who bought the land from her sisters and a brother. Mrs. Duncan’s children are Troy Duncan of Lometa, Texas; Mrs. Dorothy Elliot of Alabama; Doyle Duncan of Andrews, Texas; and Mrs. Opal Prachyl, who is deceased.”
