Notes
Allie was born in Brown County, Texas, to James N. Martin (1838- ) and Mary Jane [White] Martin (1845- ) on February 15, 1885. The 1900 census lists her as living with William E. Miller, who was her stepfather, along with Callie Martin and James Martin, her siblings and additional stepchildren of Miller. The family probably lived in the Moline area. By the 1910 census, she was living with her sister, Callie Higgins (1883-1969), and her husband Samuel P. Higgins (1851-1915), who married on January 3, 1905.1Incidentally, Callie was Payne Gap’s last postmaster, serving from December 19, 1907, until the post office closed in early 1916. The Higgins ran a store and hosted the post office after it moved to west of the Payne Gap school and cemetery (the post office’s first location was at the current Jessie Duncan place about a mile south of the school and cemetery; Richard T. Jenkins was the first postmaster). Around 1913, Allie married Robert Lee “Lee” Armstrong (1874-1940) after his first wife “Lizzie” died in 1911. Allie and Lee had one child, Mary I. (Irene) Armstrong, who was born on October 28, 1914. The couple was living in Payne Gap at the time of the birth. The 1920 census lists her as “Mrs. Allie Armstrong,” a widower (but very likely divorced), with a five-year-old daughter, Mary I. Armstrong, and living with her sister Callie in the Payne Gap area. The 1930 census reports Allie, at forty-four and divorced, still living with her sister Callie in the Payne Gap area. Allie died five years later of pellagra on January 10, 1935. Her daughter Mary, aka Irene, died a year before on November 17, 1934, and is buried next to Allie. Other relatives, including “Lizzie” and Edgar, are at rest near Allie.
