Payne Gap Cemetery files from the early 1970s report: “Small white marble square headstone with nothing on it (Slick Wilkey baby).” The female child’s death certificate confirms that the mother was Iva Joe “Josie” Hunt (1893-1962) and the father was Samuel William “Slick” Wilkey (1891-1973). J.E. Brooking, a doctor from Star, Texas, reported, “a deformed infant a-cephalic (born dead).”
