Notes
Ruby was born in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, on April 19, 1900, to Robert Logan Newton (1872–1958) and Lula May [Price] Newton (1878–1920). She lived most of her life with husband Tom Hunt in the Payne Gap area of Mills County, Texas, until poor health forced her to move into a nursing home in Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas, where she passed away.
From JD Hunt‘s unpublished autobiography:
“Daddy [Tom Hunt] worked for the railroad in Terrell, Texas, for many years as a Morse code operator …. When Grandma got older and feeble, they ran an ad in the papers to hire someone to take care of her. My mama saw the ad and answered it. Mama had a son named Roland Clarence Sperry from a previous marriage.1Records suggest that Ruby was likely never married to Oscar H F “Fred” Sperry (1902-1967), Roland’s father; Fred married A. (Audrey) L. Gorman on April 20, 1920, and was still married to her as reported by the 1930 census; Roland was born on May 21, 1922, and is not listed as living with Fred in 1930. [Ruby and Roland] boarded a train in Wapanuka, Oklahoma, and came to Goldthwaite, Texas. Daddy quit his job and came home to the farm. Daddy picked [Ruby and Sperry] up and brought [them] to Simms Creek. In 1923 [April 16, 1924], Daddy and Mama got married in Moline, Texas.”
