Description from old Payne Gap Cemetery inventory: Infants or small child’s grave marked at head and foot with native rocks. Another document says identifies three children’s grave in a row leading up to Hensley’s grave, and one of these is the child of Will and Fannie Mathis. On August 20, 2026, Sam Duncan assigned this grave as the child of the Mathis parents.
August 29, 2026 update: There is strong evidence that this Mathis child belonged to Edd and Jenny Mathis. Ancestry.com and a birth certificate report that the couple had a son, Otis, who was born on September 16, 1911. The child was healthy at birth, but he died a short time later on February 17, 1912, when his parents were living in Moline. The child’s death certificate was not located, and no “missing” children of Will and Fannie Mathis were found.
