Notes

Nancy “Nannie” was born to James R. Medford (1820-1903) and Mary Eliza [Kennedy] Medford (1820-1893). Her exact birth date is unknown, but she was very likely born in Chireno, near Nacogdoches, Texas, in 1855. She married Robert “Bob” Burns Carswell (1857-1900?) on October 22, 1879, in Hood County, Texas. The 1880 census reveals that the couple were living in San Augustine, Texas. Bob’s mother was Laura Emma [Norwood] Carswell, and his brother was William Thomas “W.T. or Uncle Billy” Carswell. Bob and Nancy had two children: Ellie [Carswell] Melton (1886-1970) and Robert (b. 1884). Nancy and Bob were part of an exodus of Carswells that moved to the Payne Gap/Moline area from San Augustine in the 1880s.

Her life cut short at thirty-four, Nancy rests between Laura Carswell and Byrd Carswell near several other Carswell family members.
