Laura was born on November 25, 1825, in North Carolina, to William Coleson Norwood (1794-1885), a postmaster in North Carolina, and Elizabeth Wade [LeGrand] Norwood (1808-1869). By the 1860 census, she was living with her family in San Augustine, Texas. Around 1845, she married John Jacob Carswell, probably in San Augustine, Texas. Along with William T. Carswell, she was mother to eight other children.
Patsy Blasdell, a living relative, recounts, “The story goes that Laura Carswell came to visit her son, W.T. (William Thomas) Carswell (1846-1912), and suddenly died … “
