Notes
Edgar was born to Robert Lee “Lee” Armstrong (1874-1940) and Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” [Davis] Armstrong (1877-1911) on August 7, 1894, in Bastrop, Texas. By 1910, he and his family had moved to Goldthwaite, Texas. His mother passed away in 1911 at age thirty-four when Edgar was about seventeen. His 1917 WWI draft card shows that he was still living in Goldthwaite, also revealing that he had a tall, slender build with black hair and gray eyes. The 1920 census shows that at twenty-four, he was living with his brother-in-law, William B. Hancock, in the Payne Gap area. His father died from injuries sustained from a head-on collusion that occurred on May 30, 1940, about five miles north of Lampasas—Lee survived the crash but died a few days later in a Brownwood hospital. The obituary notes Edgar’s home as being in Gatesville, Texas (likely Pidcoke, Coryell County, Texas, as revealed in his WWII draft card dated 1942). In 1950, according to the census, he was living with his nephew, Roy A. Hancock, in Dimmit County, Texas. He never married. Edgar died of “generalized carcinoma” on May 5, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, and his death certificate lists his occupation as dairy farmer. He is buried next to his mother.
