“Her last words were, God is as near me here as in my own home, thou shall have a glorious waking when the blessed Lord doth come …The first burried [sic] at the gap. Aged 65”–Monument.

Laura was born on November 25, 1825, in North Carolina, to William Coleson Norwood (1794-1885) and Elizabeth Wade [LeGrand] Norwood (1808-1869). By the 1860 census, she was living with her family in San Augustine, Texas. Around 1845, she married John Jacob Carswell, probably in San Augustine, Texas.

Patsy Blasdell, a living relative, recounts, “The story goes that Laura Carswell came to visit W.T. (William Thomas) Carswell (1846-1912) [in the Moline area], her son, and suddenly died … “
