Tom was born in Gatesville, Texas, on November 13, 1859, to Thomas Wiley Wilkey (1822-1905) and Sarah “Sally” [Carson] Wilkey (1832-1904), both of whom were born in North Carolina. He married Martha Helen Honeycutt on April 19, 1883, likely in Gatesville. By 1905, the couple and their growing family were living in the Payne Gap area near the Levi Hunt, Arthur Hunt, and William Venable households. They had seven children. One of his daughters, Jessie [Wilkey] Mathis (1888-1907), died at age nineteen and is buried at the Payne Gap Cemetery.
