Richard was born on November 17, 1882, in Haywood, Alabama, to John C. Barton (1846-1914) and Mary Jane [Smith] Barton (1846-1932). He moved to Mills County in the early 1900s and married Josephine “Josie” Hunt on October 21, 1906, in Goldthwaite. Sometime between 1920 and 1930, the couple moved to McCamey, Texas. They had three children: Vera, Hazel, Mirriam, and Mary. He died from appendicitis in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on October 21, 1933, just a year before his wife Josie died in a car accident in 1934.
