Notes

Rachel was born to James Oliver (1804-1873) and Nancy [Broughton] Oliver (1816-1860) in Missouri. She married Manual James Morris “James” Steele (1825-1865), and the couple had three children. James was a Union solider and died near Nashville after reaching the rank of lieutenant; he is buried in Nashville. By 1870, according to the U.S. Census, Rachel appears to have been a single mother living with her three children in Jasper, Missouri. She later married Rosmer Nelson (1841- ), who was born in Denmark. In 1880, the couple was living in Llano County, Texas, with two children (John Steele and Marsh Steele), according to the 1880 U.S. Census. She is buried next to Birt Steele, her grandson.
