Maxine was born to Ralph Justin McMurray (1918-1975) and Glena Gloy “Gloy” [Duncan] McMurray (1920-2002) on September 24, 1939. She and her parents lived in the Payne Gap area at the time of her birth, but by the 1950 census the family was living in Hobbs, New Mexico. She graduated from Hobbs High School in 1957 and continued her education at The University of Texas at Austin. She married John Robert “Johnny” Armstrong (1938-2001) in Hobbs, New Mexico, on June 9, 1960. The couple had two children, John Armstrong and Glenna Armstrong Chance. She died on March 23, 2004, in Hobbs, and is buried between her grandparents, Vergie Duncan and Henry Tharp Duncan.
On 2025-06-01, Mollie [Duncan] Kelly recalled a visit to Gloy and Maxine’s home in Hobbs, likely sometime in the 1980s. Mollie remembered Maxine’s impressive octagon-shaped aquarium.
