Notes
Mattie was born in Mills County to James Arthur Goode (1832-1915) and Cynthia Ann “Syntha” [Vick] Goode (1852-1918), but by 1880 the family had moved to Coleman, Texas. In 1890, she married Thomas Edward Mayo (1869-1923). In 1900, the couple was living in Lavaca, Texas, with her parents. By 1910, they were living in San Saba, Texas, with eight children. At her death, she was attended by Dr. J.E. Brooking, who practiced in Star, Texas. According to her death certificate she died of a blood clot or clots in her heart. According to a contemporary doctor, “Basically as the bacteria grow on the heart valve, they create small exophytic vegetations that can break off, thus creating the emboli that can travel around the circulatory system and lodge in various small arteries and organs and I guess produce blood clots. She apparently had clots in her right subclavian and axillary arteries.”
