SPOUSE: William Thomas Carswell, married August 1, 1874, Jackson Co., Texas

CHILDREN: Mattie L. Carswell (1878-1963) and Walter Byrd Carswell (1883-1965)

Lydia and husband William moved to Moline, Texas from San Augustine Co., Texas in 1881, with 2-year old Mattie in tow. They camped under a big live oak in Pigfoot pasture while William built them a log cabin. Son, Byrd was born here. They also built a large log barn, a 25-foot well, and a cattle corral of stacked rocks. This corral was for their wild horses, and the horses of travelers passing by.

Lynda had a quest for knowledge, subscribing to many magazines and buying books. She was very helpful to the neighbors, had a green thumb which produced a rose garden and vegetable garden. She helped work the land, gather the crops, milk the cows and feed the chickens. As with most families of the day, they lived off the land.

After her husband’s death in 1912, Lydia lived with her daughter Mattie and her family ini Moline, Texas. She worked hard caring for teachers who boarded with Mattie, as well as helping with Mattie’s 3 children, and household chores, while Mattie kept the post office. By then, Mattie was also a widow.

Lydia is buried beside her husband in Payne Gap Cemetary.
