Notes
J.T. was born on April 18, 1849, in Efaula, Barbour County, Alabama, to James Madison Cook (1820–1859) and Elizabeth M. [Stewart] Cook Hight (1823–1885). Elizabeth remarried after James died, coupling with Felix Franklin Hight (1818-1887) and moving to Texas. J.T. married Martha Jane “Mattie” Cook on February 18, 1875, in Gatesville, Texas. The couple and their children lived in Gatesville before moving to Moline in the mid 1890s. They lived in Lometa according to the 1920 census. J.T. and Mattie had twelve children, including those buried at the Payne Gap Cemetery. J.T. died in Moline, Texas, of “mitral insufficiency of heart,” complicated by cirrhosis of the liver. He was attended at his death by Dr. James T. Hicks, of Moline.
J.T. Cook was a Payne Gap School trustee around 1905, when W.H. Hearne deeded four acres to him and F.M. Worthington, also a trustee, to expand the school grounds.
