Notes

Charley “Bud” was born in Moline, Texas, but it appears that the Mathis family had moved to San Patricio County, Texas, by time of the 1910 census. The 1920 census shows that he lived with his single mother, Maude, in the Payne Gap area, near the Arthur H. Hunt, Alva Clary, and Jessie Taylor families. He married Mary Davis on May 28, 1932, in Upshur, Texas. The couple had one son, M.C. Mathis (1942-2006). On October 24, 1931, April 20, 1932, and June 10, 1932, “Bud,” then working as a truck driver, was convicted on several counts of “passing a forged instrument” and sentenced to seven years in prison in Huntsville, Texas. He was discharged on February 16, 1937. In 1940, following his release from prison, the couple first moved to Daisetta, Texas, and then by the 1940 census, had moved to Houma, Louisiana. The census reported his occupation as “roughneck.” He was living in Kempner, Texas, when he died on February 6, 1978. He is buried next to his sister, Eslar Pearl [Mathis] Rutherford and immediately to the east of his parents. His monument appears to be the stateliest of all the Mathis family buried at the cemetery.
