Notes

“Infant son of Ethel & Marion Hughes”–Monument

Carl was the son of Marion Sippio Hughes (1870-1953), born in Mississippi, and Ethel Mae [Eakin] Hughes (1883-1962), born in Texas. The couple married in Lampasas, Texas, on October 25, 1897. The 1900 census shows that they were living in Travis County, Texas, with two daughters, and by the 1910 census, they were living in the Lometa area with five children. Marion’s WWI draft card, dated September 9, 1918, shows that his address was in Moline, Texas.  In 1920, the family was living in Adamsville, Texas. Besides Carl, Marion and Ethel had seven children, including Nina Lora [Hughes] Cook (1902–1947),  Arthur Truman Hughes (1905–1988), Allie Gertrude [Hughes] Curtiss (1906–1999), Nancy Inez [Hughes] Coonrod (1912–1963),  Fred Warren Hughes (1915–1993), Robert Lee Hughes (1922–2017), and Norma Pauline Hughes (1924–2013). We may never know why the couple decided to bury Carl at Payne Gap.
